We invite you to the Global Day of Coderetreat 2018 in Cluj-Napoca, organised for the 7th consecutive year in Cluj-Napoca! This year, the global event will take place on November 17th, 2018.

Coderetreat is a day-long, intensive practice event, focusing on the fundamentals of software development and design. By providing developers the opportunity to take part in focused practice, away from the pressures of ‘getting things done’, the coderetreat format has proven itself to be a highly effective means of skill improvement. Practicing the basic principles of modular and object-oriented design, developers can improve their ability to write code that minimises the cost of change over time.

Global Day of Coderetreat is a world-wide event celebrating passion and software craftsmanship. Last year, many passionate software developers from Cluj-Napoca joined developers in cities around the world in spending the day practicing the craft of software development using the coderetreat format.

Guest Session – Tales from the SRE trenches, with Martín Ferrari

We invite you to a new RABS Guest Session, with Martín Ferrari, Debian Developer, Free Software promoter and a Google ex-employee.

Title: Tales from the Site Reliability Engineering trenches

Abstract:
In recent years, a new concept started to show up in job hires for operations positions: Site Reliability Engineering (SRE).

Spearheaded by Google, the idea is spreading to other big companies that face themselves with the challenge of supporting very complex systems with growth rates that can not be matched by linearly increasing the workforce of the operations team.

In this talk I would like to briefly introduce the core ideas of what is SRE, and what makes it successful; with an emphasis on a few aspects that can be applied to organisations of any size and pedigree:

  • Shared responsibility between developers and SREs for the availability of the service, and other tools to transform the traditional tension between operations and development into an asset.
  • Emphasis on automation, and quotas on operational work, that allow for growing the service faster than the workforce, while making workers happier.
  • Modern monitoring techniques, their usage as tools to measure availability, predict problems, perform forensics, and enforce failure budgets.
  • Designing systems for scale and failure, post-mortems as learning tools, ubiquitous code reviews, rigorous design documents, data-driven decisions, and other concepts that can be applied everywhere at a low cost with excellent results.

Martín Ferrari has been in the industry for over 18 years, some times as a programmer, some times as a systems administrator, and most of the time as both.

Two years after landing the dream job as an SRE for Google, he decided to quit the office life and become a digital nomad, consulting for companies around the globe while on the road.

He is a Debian Developer and a Free Software activist and promoter. He is also on a quest to visit all the pubs in the world.

Time & date: October 19th, 2015, 17:30 – 20.30

Place: Hotel City Plaza, Sindicatelor 9-11, Cluj-Napoca

Romanian Conferences in May

We bring to your attention some of the technical conferences that are taking place in Romania in May 2013 which we recommend and advertise here.

IT Camp is already a well-known technical event of Cluj-Napoca, being the largest premium conference on Microsoft technologies in Romania, at its 3rd edition. This year, it takes place in 23rd and 24th of May. This edition has three tracks which gather well known Romanian and international speakers. RABS is again represented among the speakers by Sergiu and Florin who talk on the Architecture & Best Practice track. We are also saluting Peter Leeson who is coming again to talk at a tech event in Cluj.

I T.A.K.E. Unconference proposes a different format for a technical conference by focusing on code. It is the only technology agnostic conference in Central and Eastern Europe. It takes place in 30 and 31st of May in Bucharest. The program is on five tracks which favors informal talks, debates and live practicing with the speakers and among the participants. This format may prove to be an efficient way to learn useful practices. RABS will attend through Florin who is going to propose a discussion on Unit Testing and Code Quality in an Open Space session.

Romanian Testing Community Conference has reached its second edition. It takes place on the 16th – 17th of May 2013, in Cluj-Napoca. This year it gathers 8 international speakers and two local speaker in a program organized on two tracks. The entire event will be officiated by Scott Barber. The second day is dedicated to two full-day workshops conducted by Paul Gerrard on “How to create a test strategy” and Andrew Harding on “Performance Testing (Back to the Basis).

We are happy to announce the presence of a very popular international speaker to present and answer your questions at one of our workshops.

After more than 40 years Moore’s law is still going strong, and it looks like it will continue to do so for at least ten more years, and the free performance lunch is over, unless we change the way we think and program our applications.

You’ll have the opportunity to learn about patterns for parallel programming from Tibi Covaci, who shares his experience and insights, most relevantly for any (in translation, discussions will be relevant (and enjoyable) to): Senior Software Developer, Software Architect and Solution Architect with focus or passion for Software Architecture, regardless of their favorite technologies.

Tibi is a Microsoft MVP & ASP.NET insider, Telerik MVP & Insider, INETA Speaker, IASA Speaker, and the INETA Country Lead for Sweden.
